The Benefits of Socialization for Seniors

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: Psalms 68:5-6a

The staff members and residents in Hickory Villa form a close-knit community which lives, works and plays together. This togetherness brings a comforting security to each day and is one of the ways that an assisted living community enriches the lives of everyone involved.

The benefits of socialization for seniors extends beyond emotional and mental stimulation. Individuals who are lonely and isolated are more likely to skip meals and suffer physical health issues due to inactivity and stress than seniors who eat and participate in activities with family and friends. Here are two of the ways that socialization can improve the quality of life for older adults.

1. Fellowship

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 KJV

Companionship and a sense of belonging are fundamental to an individual's overall well-being. Seniors are more likely to push past aches and fatigue and pursue interests when they can share the experience with others. This boost in activity helps lower pain and improve health, providing more energy to accomplish more activities. This beneficial cycle naturally enhances mood and fosters a positive outlook on life that helps seniors look forward to each day.

Friendships with other seniors lets individuals share problems with peers who can relate to and understand their situations and emotions firsthand. This reduces frustration and isolation by providing comfort and encouragement for seniors struggling to overcome limitations.

Having strong bonds with others also lets seniors talk with someone they trust during difficult times, such as the loss of a loved one or sudden health issue. This outlet can greatly lower stress and help prevent depression as they adapt to changes in their lives and routines.

2. Purpose

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 KJV

As a faith-based community, we at Hickory Villa know that God didn't create people to be alone and that being able to interact with and help others brings a deep sense of accomplishment and joy to life.

People desire meaning at any age, and seniors who require assistance with daily tasks often struggle with self-esteem and a lack of purpose.

Social activities, however, can help motivate a senior to try new things and discover abilities and talents they may have overlooked. They can then take these strengths and use them to improve their own lives and the lives of those around them.

The fulfillment that the cultivation of friendships and participation in charitable acts provides serves as a reminder that life is worthwhile and encourages seniors to choose to continue growing as individuals and enjoying their lives to the fullest.
