Psalm 18:28 says "You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light."Not only does God turn our darkness into light, he calls us to shine that light into the world around us. That shining isn't so others can see our brightness, but so they can see the work of Christ in us. Living in an assisted living community doesn't remove God's call to be a light in the darkness of the world; in some ways, being a part of a community like that at Hickory Villa in Omaha, NE, makes it more important to be a beacon.

As we celebrate National Grandparents Day this month in Hickory Villa, let us remember the special role that God has given to many seniors. In Deuteronomy 4:9 KJV, God calls grandparents to not forget the many things they have learned in their lives and to pass them on to their families.

Sandwiches are the mainstay of lunchtime, but when you live in an apartment here at Hickory Villa and don’t have a lot of refrigerator space, storing them can be a challenge. You can make sandwiches from so many more ingredients than just lunch meat, however. This is especially helpful if you need to maintain your blood sugar levels between meals or just need a fast go-to when you don’t want to go to the dining room.

Scammers work hard to trick unsuspecting people into giving up personal information or money, and knowing how to recognize a phone scam can ensure you aren’t losing your money or risking your finances or credit. Here are three current scams to watch out for.

Anywhere you look, technology is available to enhance — or interfere, depending on how you see it — with every aspect of your daily life. Whether you already embrace technology or simply want to develop some skills to be able to use more devices or services, consider these three reasons why you should work to become tech-savvy this summer. Then you can explore opportunities to learn more online, with lessons from friends or family or classes offered locally here in Omaha.

Staying cool in the summer months is important, particularly if your body no longer regulates heat very well. But how can you resist the wonderful weather outside? It’s bright and sunny, you’ve been pent up inside all winter, and that means it’s time to enjoy some sunshine. Here’s how to enjoy your Omaha summer without breaking a sweat this year.

We’re excited to host a special networking event, Have Your Cake and Eat It Too, right here at Hickory Villa on Thursday, February 22nd, from 4:00-5:30PM. In addition to enjoying some sweet treats (which everyone deserves in the middle of winter), visitors will have the chance to meet and mingle with our senior care professionals, including our Executive Director Cecil Wissink and our Health Services Director, Amber Streittmatter, LPN.
